          What the work is

Athos Bulcão was a Brazilian painter and sculptor, born in Rio de Janeiro in 1918. His career included collaborations on several of Oscar Niemeyer’s projects in Brasília.

          How it was made

In the 1940s, Bulcão assisted Cândido Portinari with the São Francisco de Assis painting at the Pampulha Church in Belo Horizonte. He later lived in Paris, returned to Brazil, and moved to Brasília in 1958.

          What works

That sequence offers a useful way to approach his work: follow the relationships among the artist, his collaborators and the places in which the work appeared. It keeps the architectural setting in view alongside the individual maker.

          What does not

A biography provides orientation, but a particular project deserves its own close examination. Avoid treating every collaboration as an identical expression of a single style; begin with the work and its setting.

          What it influenced

Bulcão’s participation in the construction of Brasília supplies a concrete connection between his artistic practice and a larger architectural undertaking. It is a more specific starting point than an unsupported claim that he transformed all Brazilian design.

          Is it worth your time

Study Bulcão through an individual work in its architectural context. His documented collaborations make the relationship between art and building the most productive question to pursue.
