What the work is
The Eames Office created Mathematica for the California Museum of Science and Industry’s new science wing in 1961, with IBM’s involvement. It offers a specific way into Charles and Ray Eames’s exhibition practice: mathematics presented through objects, graphics and participation.
How it was made
The exhibition combined interactive demonstrations with historical material. Mirrors, moving balls and a long chronology provided different routes into a subject that could otherwise remain confined to symbols on a page.
What works
A visitor can notice a relationship before learning its formal explanation. Physical change supplies a reason to look again, while adjacent information allows a more sustained inquiry than the demonstration alone.
What does not
A compelling apparatus can become entertainment without understanding. The design challenge is the connection between what happens and what it means; movement does not automatically communicate a mathematical principle.
What it influenced
The original installation remained in place for decades, and versions were subsequently displayed elsewhere. That endurance supports studying the exhibition’s organization, without proving that every visitor learned the same lesson.
