What the work is
Russell Hobbs introduced the K1 automatic electric kettle in 1955. Its defining feature was an automatic shutoff mechanism, rather than electric water heating by itself.
How it was made
Steam reached a bimetallic strip near the rear of the kettle. The strip actuated a switch that turned off the appliance, connecting a physical consequence of boiling to control of the electrical heating process.
What works
The design closed a loop between the task and its completion. Heating water no longer depended solely on a person noticing the boil and operating the switch at that moment.
What does not
An automatic endpoint is only one part of a kettle’s usability. Filling, lifting and pouring remain separate interactions; the shutoff mechanism alone does not establish how well the whole appliance performs those tasks.
What it influenced
The K2 followed in 1960 and remained in production for decades. Later Russell Hobbs models explored new materials and forms, showing that control, enclosure and handling could continue to develop independently.
Is it worth your time
Worth studying for appliance design. Diagram the sequence from heat to steam to switch and compare it with the user’s actions. The important feature is a change in behaviour, even when the product remains recognisably a kettle.
