          Objects and their surroundings

Jurgen Bey is a Dutch product designer who studied in Eindhoven. His work includes furniture, interiors and public spaces, produced through his studio and companies including Droog, Tichelaar, Moooi and Prooff.

          A collaborative studio

In 2002 he established Studio Makkink & Bey with architect Rianne Makkink. Works represented in the Centraal Museum include his Treetrunk Bench and the EarChair made with Makkink. He has also worked in design education, including teaching in Eindhoven.

          What to study

Begin with an individual object and then examine its relationship with the space around it. Compare the requirements of a seat with the role it takes in an interior or shared setting. This connects the different scales of his practice while retaining the collaborators attached to each project. A studio name provides context; the specific work supplies the basis for a closer assessment.
