Additional System — Joe Colombo

A family of cushions turns seating into a question of arrangement.

Joe Colombo's Additional System is modular seating, identified by Tacchini as a 1967 design reissued in 2024. It should not be confused with his separate Total Furnishing Unit.

          What the work is

Joe Colombo’s Additional System is modular seating, identified by Tacchini as a 1967 design reissued in 2024. It should not be confused with his separate Total Furnishing Unit.

          How it was made

The manufacturer’s presentation describes cushions in six sizes combined through changes in number and position. The current ottoman specification lists a wooden frame, polyurethane padding and an aluminium base; those details describe the reissue, not automatically every historic edition.

          What works

Variation becomes part of the design rather than a departure from it. Related pieces can produce different seating arrangements while keeping the logic of the family visible.

          What does not

A modular appearance does not guarantee that every configuration is equally comfortable or practical. Available room, posture and the actual connections between components constrain the possibilities.

          What it influenced

The 2024 reissue is evidence of the design’s renewed production. Its continuing interest lies in treating a seat as a relationship among elements, rather than only as a fixed silhouette.

          Is it worth your time

Worth comparing through several configurations and their dimensions. Ask what each arrangement permits a person to do, and distinguish the original proposition from the specifications of a contemporary product.
