Braun — Instructions Within a Communication System

Product information can share an identity without losing its distinct instructional job.

Braun's product instructions formed part of a coordinated communication approach. Günther Staeffler's historical account explicitly includes manuals and brochures alongside displays and exhibition stands. It does not establish a particular 1960 manual designed solely by Otl Aicher.

          What the work is

Braun’s product instructions formed part of a coordinated communication approach. Günther Staeffler’s historical account explicitly includes manuals and brochures alongside displays and exhibition stands. It does not establish a particular 1960 manual designed solely by Otl Aicher.

          How it was made

The account describes a shared ordering principle intended to make information recognizably Braun. Aicher and Hans G. Conrad developed presentation systems, while Wolfgang Schmittel adapted elements in implementation; the broader programme was collaborative.

          What works

Continuity can help a user recognize that the document belongs with the product. It also makes information design a considered part of the experience rather than an administrative afterthought.

          What does not

Brand consistency and instructional clarity are different tests. A manual still needs an intelligible sequence, accurate diagrams and language appropriate to its reader; a common visual style cannot establish those qualities on its own.

          What it influenced

The historical source documents the programme’s extension across communication formats. That supplies context for examining individual manuals, but cannot support a claim that every later instruction sheet followed an unchanged original template.

          Is it worth your time

Worth studying beside a dated, complete manual. Compare its treatment of parts and actions with the associated product and brochure. This brief establishes the system context; edition-specific typography requires the actual document.
