Deborah Berke is an American architect and founder of the New York firm TenBerke, formerly Deborah Berke Partners. She studied architecture at the Rhode Island School of Design and urban design at the City College of New York.
A career in teaching
Berke began teaching at Yale in 1987 and became the first woman to serve as dean of its School of Architecture in 2016. Her publications include Architecture of the Everyday with Steven Harris. She received the AIA/ACSA Topaz Medallion for architectural education in 2022 and the AIA Gold Medal for 2025.

Study one building alongside her writing on everyday architecture. Ask which aspects of ordinary use receive attention and how that attention becomes a spatial decision. This connects an architectural proposition with something a reader can inspect. The teaching career and awards provide context, while the building remains the place to evaluate the design itself.
