Kleenex Tissue

A paper product found its dominant use after customers encountered it for another purpose.

Kleenex facial tissue was introduced in 1924 as a disposable material for removing cold cream. Its early identity belonged to cosmetic care before its use as a handkerchief replacement became dominant.

          What the work is

Kleenex facial tissue was introduced in 1924 as a disposable material for removing cold cream. Its early identity belonged to cosmetic care before its use as a handkerchief replacement became dominant.

          How it was made

The product developed from a creped-paper material into a thinner, softer sheet. Its absorbency and disposable format allowed it to perform a familiar cleaning task with a different material and cleanup routine.

          What works

The design lesson is the relationship between material capability and actual use. A sheet introduced for one kind of cleaning could serve another without becoming an entirely different object.

          What does not

Disposability makes a new sheet available for each use but also makes discarding part of the routine. This account does not provide the lifecycle evidence needed to compare that trade-off quantitatively with reusable cloth.

          What it influenced

By the 1930s, promotion increasingly emphasised use for colds and as a handkerchief substitute. The shift demonstrates how a product’s established purpose can emerge through use and communication after its introduction.

          Is it worth your time

Worth studying for product positioning. Separate what the material can do from the task first advertised for it. That distinction helps explain how an apparently modest object can acquire a different place in everyday life.
