What the work is

Open Sans is an open-source humanist sans-serif typeface. It is a widened, italic-inclusive evolution of Droid Sans, released by Google in 2011.

How it was made

Steve Matteson designed Open Sans under commission from Google in 2011. It evolved from Droid Sans — the first UI font for Android phones — with widened characters and added true italic variants. A variable font version with Hebrew support was released in March 2021.

What works

Wide apertures and a large x-height deliver high legibility on screens and at small sizes. Its 897-glyph repertoire covers Latin, Greek, and Cyrillic with extensive diacritics. The true italic style distinguishes it from neo-grotesques.

What does not

It does not solve multilingual typesetting beyond Latin, Greek, Cyrillic, and (as of 2021) Hebrew. It makes no claim to support Arabic, Devanagari, or East Asian scripts. Its Easter egg behaviour is playful but isolated — not integrated into broader typographic infrastructure.
