What the work is

A sequence of street and architectural lighting designs — Slotsholm Lamp (1920), Paris Lamp (1925), Forum building fixtures — built around a single technical insight: controlling glare through layered reflection and baffling, not diffusion or dimming.

How it was made

Henningsen used systematic analysis of reflection and baffling to control light rays. He began with the Slotsholm Lamp in 1920, iterated through the Paris Lamp in 1925, and refined the approach for the Forum building lighting contract. He rejected gas-light conventions and insisted electric lighting required unfamiliar forms.

What works

The three-shade system distributed light obliquely, avoiding direct glare while warming its tone. It solved a real problem — uneven vehicle illumination — by redirecting light paths instead of intensifying output. Warm, soft, non-glaring light was achieved by geometry, not material choice.

What does not

The Slotsholm Lamp failed commercially when its manufacturer removed components that caused glare — proving the design’s integrity depended on full execution. No source confirms mass production, durability, or user adaptability beyond its stated installations.
