Volkswagen — The 2019 Flat Logo

Reducing dimensional effects makes an established monogram easier to move between media.

Volkswagen introduced a flat, two-dimensional version of its logo in 2019. This brief covers that redesign, whose stated purpose included flexible digital use, rather than assigning authorship of the brand's earliest emblem.

          What the work is

Volkswagen introduced a flat, two-dimensional version of its logo in 2019. This brief covers that redesign, whose stated purpose included flexible digital use, rather than assigning authorship of the brand’s earliest emblem.

          How it was made

The redesign retained the central VW identity while reducing its treatment to essential graphic elements. Volkswagen presented it within a wider brand programme, alongside the introduction of the electric ID.3.

          What works

Removing a simulated material finish can make a sign less dependent on one kind of rendering. The recognisable structure can then be applied across screens, print and physical branding with fewer visual assumptions.

          What does not

A cleaner logo does not establish a cleaner product or company. The environmental and corporate meanings attached to the launch require evidence beyond the drawing of the mark.

          What it influenced

Volkswagen’s annual report places the redesign within its 2019 brand transition. The useful design case is how a familiar identifier is adapted for new applications while retaining continuity.

          Is it worth your time

Worth comparing at the scale of a small interface icon as well as a vehicle badge. Ask what information the simplification removes and what recognition it preserves. The change is easiest to judge in use.
