What the work is
A series of interlocking garment systems—Pleats Please, A-POC, 132 5., and me Issey Miyake—each built around a specific material-process constraint: permanent pleating after assembly, consumer-cuttable tubes, foldable 2D-to-3D geometry, and one-size stretch delivery.
How it was made
Miyake reversed garment construction: cut and sewn garments were pleated post-assembly using heat-press treatment between paper layers; A-POC used machine-processed fabric tubes for consumer cutting; 132 5. used flat, recyclable PET-and-natural-fibre shapes that unfold into 3D garments; me Issey Miyake used one-size stretch polyester shirts sold in plastic tubes.
What works
Permanent pleats retain shape through washing and compression. A-POC gives control over garment form without sewing skill. 132 5. achieves structural transformation with no seams or darts. me Issey Miyake eliminates sizing decisions entirely.
What does not
The work does not solve fit variability across body types beyond stretch or one-size solutions. It does not eliminate fastenings universally—zippers are rare but not absent. It does not claim durability beyond shape retention after washing.
What it influenced
It influenced garment-as-system thinking: flat-pack textile logic, post-production finishing, and consumer-participatory fabrication—visible in later zero-waste pattern design, modular fashion, and computational folding research.
