Nakagin Capsule Tower

Metabolism’s only built manifesto — and its first and final failure.

The Nakagin Capsule Tower was the world’s first capsule architecture project: a mixed-use residential and office tower in Tokyo’s Ginza district, designed by Kisho Kurokawa and completed 1970–1972. It consisted of two interconnected concrete towers (11 and 13 floors) housing 140 prefabricated capsules. Each capsule was attached independently by four high-tension bolts and cantilevered from the shaft. Plumbing connected via a 1 m flexible umbilical. Capsules were fully fitted with utilities and interiors off-site before transport and on-site attachment. Construction spanned both the Ginza site and a factory 450 km away. It served as a rare remaining example of Japanese Metabolism.

What the work is

How it was made

It was built in two phases: concrete towers erected on-site in Ginza, while 140 capsules were fabricated and fully fitted off-site at a factory 450 km from Tokyo. Each capsule was attached independently to the shaft using only four high-tension bolts and cantilevered outwards. Plumbing connected via a 1 m flexible umbilical.

What works

The structural separation of capsule and core works. Each unit is physically independent: bolted, cantilevered, and serviced via its own umbilical. This enabled theoretical replacement without disrupting the whole.

What does not

The capsules were never replaced. The building decayed in place. The metabolic promise — that units could be swapped every 25 years — failed in practice.

What it influenced

It seeded architectural discourse around modularity, prefabrication, and obsolescence — not through replication, but through persistent rhetorical citation as a singular, unrepeated experiment.
