          From display to painting

Otmar Alt is a German painter, graphic artist, designer and sculptor. His early training included window display and poster painting before studies in Berlin. His work is associated with vivid colour and experimentation across techniques.

          Working across formats

After studying with Hermann Bachmann, Alt worked as an assistant in stage design. In 2006 he contributed to the I Love Ruhrgebiet campaign, developing a large poster through a project that included public submissions and workshops with participants.

          A useful comparison

Compare a painting with a work intended for public display. Examine how scale, viewing distance and context change the role of colour and recognizable forms. The exercise gives his movement between art and design a specific setting. It also leaves room to distinguish individual studio decisions from projects developed through participation and a wider campaign.
