What the work is
The Salk Institute is the laboratory cluster of a planned three-part campus: two parallel concrete blocks framing a water court and the Pacific Ocean. It was built between 1959 and 1965 in La Jolla, California.
How it was made
Kahn designed a three-cluster campus but built only the laboratory cluster. He eliminated internal columns using pre-stressed concrete Vierendeel trusses engineered by August Komendant. He revised the central plaza after consulting Luis Barragan, replacing a garden with a single linear fountain and bare travertine. Lab floors have no internal walls.
What works
The column-free lab floors enable reconfiguration. The ocean-framing composition directs attention outward. The water-court plaza — stripped of plants or ornament per Barragan’s advice — creates a disciplined, horizon-focused void. The service floors integrate infrastructure without compromising floorplate flexibility.
