What the work is

A hollow sphere on a stand, open on one side, designed for sitting inside. Introduced internationally in 1966. Designed in 1963.

How it was made

Aarnio built the first prototype using an internal plywood mould, wet paper lamination, fiberglass surfacing, and upholstery. He traced his seated head movement on a wall to set height. The sphere was sized to fit through a standard doorway. A red telephone was installed inside the prototype.

What works

The ball shape satisfies the doorway constraint while creating visual novelty. The full-scale tracing method directly links human movement to form. The red telephone signals intentionality — this is a private, self-contained environment, not just seating.

What does not

The Ball Chair does not solve ergonomics, acoustics, or accessibility. Its enclosed form isolates the sitter without addressing ventilation, visibility, or ease of entry. No source claims comfort, adjustability, or mass-producibility.

What it influenced

Its simple geometric form made it suitable for science-fiction film sets. No other influence is verified.
