How it was made
Norman shifted from cognitive science to cognitive engineering through consultancy and writing. He investigated the 1979 Three Mile Island nuclear accident as part of a select team. He introduced ‘user-centered design’ in a 1986 edited book. He co-developed the Norman-Shallice model of executive functioning with Tim Shallice. He revised terminology from ‘user-centered design’ to ‘human-centered design’ and later removed the term altogether in the revised edition of The Design of Everyday Things.
What works
It identifies concrete practices: simplifying tasks, making things visible, designing for error, exploiting constraints, explaining affordances, mapping actions to outcomes. It argues that skilled designers reduce user burden by adapting artifacts — not users — to the task.
