What the work is

The High Line is a 1.45-mile-long elevated linear park, greenway, and rail trail on a former New York Central Railroad spur on Manhattan’s West Side.

How it was made

The High Line was made by repurposing an abandoned southern viaduct section of the New York Central Railroad’s West Side Line into an elevated linear park, greenway, and rail trail. It was a multidisciplinary collaboration between James Corner Field Operations, Diller Scofidio + Renfro, and Piet Oudolf. The design integrated landscape architecture, urban design, and ecology as a ‘living system’. It drew direct inspiration from Paris’s Coulée verte. Construction and opening occurred in phases between 2006 and 2014.

What works

It works by anchoring design decisions in the viaduct’s physical constraints: narrow width, fixed alignment, and industrial remnants. Planting follows microclimates created by sun exposure, wind, and substrate depth. Pathways retain original rail geometry. This fidelity to inherited structure gives coherence across phases and disciplines.

What does not

It does not resolve tensions between public access and programmed exclusivity. Its extensions — The Spur (2019) and Moynihan Connector (2023) — amplify adjacency to high-value real estate without addressing displacement or maintenance equity. The work establishes no new construction typology; it adapts an existing viaduct, and makes no claim to scalability beyond this singular structure.

What it influenced

It influenced municipal reuse strategies for obsolete rail infrastructure globally, notably in cities with elevated freight lines. It shifted expectations for public space as ecologically layered and choreographed rather than purely recreational. Its success catalysed similar proposals — but few replicate its collaborative authorship model or its grounding in a single, narrow, pre-existing structural frame.
