How it was made
Zapf designed typefaces across hot metal, phototypesetting, and digital technologies. He co-designed Palatino with August Rosenberger. He released Optima in 1958 through Stempel. In the 1990s–2000s, he collaborated with Akira Kobayashi on Linotype releases that removed metal-type manufacturing compromises. He held the world’s first professorship in typographic computer programming at RIT from 1976. He developed custom software for Zapfino with Siegel. Later Zapfino versions used Apple Advanced Typography and OpenType to enable contextual glyph substitution.
