What the work is
A body of industrial design work spanning electronics, furniture, lighting, transport, and computing—defined by mechanical innovation, functional revelation, and minimal formal resolution.
How it was made
Sapper worked through material and mechanical constraints: hinged enclosures for electronics, flip-down mechanisms for telephones, all-plastic injection moulding for chairs, low-voltage conduction in lamp arms, aircraft-derived alloys and folding kinematics for bicycles, and integrated interface logic for laptops.
What works
Each object resolves a specific constraint: transistorisation enabled portability; hinges revealed controls; flip-downs protected mouthpieces; all-plastic construction eliminated assembly; low-voltage arms removed cables; aircraft tech enabled rapid folding; the red button created an immediate, discoverable input.
What does not
