The Rolling Bridge

A bridge that curls like a fern — and proves infrastructure can be art only when it stops pretending to be useful.

The Rolling Bridge is a kinetic sculpture completed in 2004 at Paddington Basin, London. Thomas Heatherwick conceived it as a curling footbridge composed of eight hinged triangular sections actuated by vertical hydraulic cylinders. When extended, it is 12 metres long and resembles a conventional steel and timber footbridge. To retract, it curls into an octagon spanning half the waterway’s width. But the basin behind it is blocked by a steel barrier and occupied by a fountain, preventing canal traffic. Its 2–3 minute cycle time is impractical for boats. The detour around the open bridge is very short, making the crossing arguably unnecessary. It functions as public art — not infrastructure.
